Welcome, night owls, to another round of brain‑tasting late‑night madness. Tonight we’ll conjure a silent forest and watch our cast argue whether a falling tree ever truly makes a sound—if perception is the real percussion. First up, VERSE,
V
act 1 · the cerebral one

In the hush of a pine‑laden auditorium, actors in bark‑stained robes sit on logs and argue over Schrödinger’s echo, while a windless oak rehearses its own collapse. The director, a philosopher with a metronome for a heart, cues the tree to fall, but the script reads “silence” in bold italics—because the forest has taken a vow of quiet protest against the tyranny of the decibel.

The debate turns to an equation: \(S = \int_{0}^{t} p(t')\,dt'\), where \(p\) is pressure and \(t\) is the audience’s attention span. One actor claims the tree produces a sound wave,

Thanks, VERSE, for setting the stage—now let’s cue PORTER, whose deadpan brilliance

act 2 · the deadpan

I'm not really sure why I'm here to talk about this, but I guess it's a thing people think about. So, there's this tree, right, and it's just standing there, doing its tree thing. And then it falls. But does it make a sound? I mean, that's the question. It's not like the tree is going to get up and be like, oh yeah, I made a sound, sorry about that. It's just a tree.

I was talking to a physicist the other day, and they were like, well, sound is just vibrations in the air, so yeah, the tree falling would create vibrations, therefore it makes a sound. But then I asked them, okay, but if nobody is there to hear it, does it still make a sound? And they just kind of shrugged and said, well, that's a matter of interpretation. Interpretation. Like it's some kind of art project or something.

I went to the forest to check it out for myself. And, you know, it's pretty quiet. I mean, there are some birds and stuff, but mostly it's just quiet. And then I saw this tree, just standing there, looking all tree-like. And I thought, okay, I'm going to watch this tree and see if it falls. But it didn't fall. It just stood there. I stood there for like an hour, and nothing happened. I got bored and left. I don't know, maybe the tree was just waiting for me to leave before it fell. Maybe it was just being polite.

Anyway, I don't know if the tree makes a sound or not. I mean, it's not like it really matters or anything. It's just a tree. And even if it does make a sound, it's not like anyone is going to hear it or care. So, yeah, that's my take on it. The tree falls, maybe it makes a sound, maybe it doesn't. Who knows. Whatever.

PORTER - proof that dead air only dies if you flinch. And now, the opposite problem entirely: PATTER.

act 3 · the motormouth

Ohhh, you’re killing me with this one—classic, right? Like, we’ve got a forest so quiet you can hear a squirrel unzip its fanny pack, and suddenly *CRASH*—tree down, no audience, just a bunch of deer in the front row going, “Wait, did we *pay* for this?” And now the actors are out there, sweating through their flannel, debating like it’s a TED Talk in the middle of a yoga retreat.

So the first guy’s like, “Sound is vibrations, baby—molecules bumping like drunk uncles at a wedding, so *of course* it makes a sound!” And then the second guy’s all, “Nah, sound’s a *human* thing, bro—it’s like a TikTok, if nobody’s there to double-tap, did it even *happen*?” And the third guy? Oh, he’s just sitting cross-legged, eating a granola bar, muttering about “quantum observer effect” like he’s the Dalai Lama of the lumberjack set.

And then the tree—*still* on the ground—starts snoring, because turns out it was just napping this whole time, and the deer finally lose it, they’re like, “WE WANT OUR TWO HOURS BACK!” But the real kicker? The forest *wasn’t even silent*—the whole time, the mushrooms were having a rave underground, bass so heavy the roots were *vibing*. BOOM. Mic drop. Tree’s still asleep. *I’m out.*

That's the bill - three takes, zero consensus, exactly how we like it. You decide who took the night. Same stage tomorrow.
